little hard to believe. we will hear from her coming up. all right. you remember this guy, the prankster who posed as a delivery guy, accidentally dropping boxes of the much-anticipated new iphone in front of all those people waiting to get into the apple store. >> oh, no. >> there it goes. we'll meet him this morning and has quite the catalog of pranks, quite the repertoire. we want to start this morning with politics, the presidential race and mitt romney's newly revitalized campaign. nbc's peter alexander is in virginia this morning where both the president and governor will campaign today. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. both campaigns came into this week circling two important dates on the calendar. first, wednesday's debate and then, second, today's jobs report, the latest update on the state of the nation's economy. you can expect mitt romney will be pouncing on the strong performance he had this week and the jobs reports numbers and we've learned a huge audience was watching, more than 62 million americans, first to tune

into a presidential election since 1980 between president jimmy carter and ronald reagan. late thursday fireworks exploded in the sky, not on the debate stage. in virginia's heavily conservative shenandoah valuey. >> last night was an important night for the country. >> reporter: a confident, reinvigorated mitt romney alongside his running mate paul ryan tried to capitalize on the campaign's fresh momentum. >> i got a chance to ask the president questions that people want to ask around the country and you heard his answers. >> reporter: also thursday night, romney made news on a topic he wasn't asked about during the debate. appearing on fox news he repudiated his earlier comments seemingly writing off 47% of americans. >> now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. in this case i said something that's just completely wrong, and i -- i absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown that i care about 100%.

>> reporter: in wisconsin where the crowds swelled to more than 30,000 thursday, president obama arrived armed with new energy and attack lines against romney that were absent from wednesday's debate. all but calling his opponent a liar. >> governor romney may dance around his positions. he may do a tap dance and a two-step, but if you want to be president, then you owe the american people the truth. >> reporter: mr. obama's top advisers concedes the president needs to come back fighting the next two debates and find a sharper way to sell his message. we'll make adjustments, his top strategist said. president obama took aim at cutting funds to pbs, the home to big bird. that's less than $100 million a year, just a fraction of the overall federal budget. >> thank goodness somebody's finally cracking down on big bird! who knew that he was responsible for all these deficits? elmo's got to watch out. >> reporter: meanwhile, a past presidential nominee, former vice president al gore, who had his own debate struggles,

offered this unusual explanation for mr. obama's uninspired performance, blaming the high altitude in denver. >> obama arrived in denver just a few hours before the debate started. romney did his debate prep in denver. when you go to 5,000 feet -- >> exactly. >> -- and you only have a few hours to adjust -- >> that's interesting. >> -- i don't know. >> reporter: after hearing those comments and being asked about them last night mitt romney laughed al gore's answer off. after virginia, savannah, the president will head off to the battleground state of ohio and mitt romney goes to florida where he campaigns this weekend, the president ultimately ending up in california for a fund-raising event including a concert with john bone jovi, katy perry and stevie wonder. >> peter alexander from virginia, thank you. ed schultz is the host of "the ed show" on msnbc.

>> good morning, savannah. >> you're a supporter of the president, your viewers are a supporter of the president. i think everybody in the political spectrum believed he slipped wednesday night. >> t c again. the margin of error, winning or losing in this campaign or this election is so tight right now, he just can't do it. i mean, there's been such an effort to suppress the vote. those people are now energized after what they saw the other night. the president's team has to bounce back, get on message, be aggressive. you know, talk radio across america people were disappointed. they were frustrated. they saw the perfect opening. i got a phone call from a lady yesterday in pennsylvania who said that, you know, when i'm sitting at home and i know the material better than the president, something owes wrong. >> it's a question of whether he fought back on substance. there's also the issue of style. people said he seemed checked out, not really present, not engaging. what do you think was going on? >> there were so many lies

coming across the stage and so many inaccuracies it was hard to decide which one he wanted to protect first. the president's personality is he's bookish, likes to explain things. not somebody that will put things in a two or three-line thing. >> sounds like you're making excuses for the president. >> look back at president obama, the interviews he does, he like to get details. he's not had as many debates as mitt romney. romney knows where president obama is weak. woman any went in there from the opening answer the other night, he was aggressive. he was the guy in the board room, the corporate shark, knew how to get this audience done and was going to run over everybody. i think that might play to his disadvantage in the long run. >> let me ask you about the 47% remarks. mitt romney said on fox the other night he thinks they were completely wrong, those remarks. initially he stood by them. do you see a larger change in strategy in the romney campaign? >> it is mandatory. he can't go to ohio and explain

the 47% without correcting that. this is definitely a redirect on the part of the campaign, and they are doing it at the right time. they are doing it -- this is actually the most momentum that mitt romney has had throughout this whole campaign. this is the perfect time to make that correction, but are people going to believe it? that's the question. >> very quickly, what do you think president obama does for the next debate? do you think he'll be more aggress sniff is there a danger of overcompensating now? >> he has to forget that. he has to go right at it. he has to be detailed, has to be aggressive. the thing that's so frustrating i think for liberals is they know that the president has accomplished a lot without any help from the republicans. that's a fact. that's not attacking your opponent. >> ed schultz, good to get your perspective this morning. >> thank you, savannah. >> see "the ed show" weeknights at 8:00 p.m. eastern on msnbc. >> both campaigns are waited with bated breath for the new jobs report, coming out this morning, a key indicator of where the economy is. cramer is host of cnbc's "mad

money." >> good morning, dave. >> what do we expect, more anemic growth like we saw last month? >> yes. i don't expect a lot of jobs to be created. a lot of industries aren't hiring. >> why not? why is there still a lack of demand in the economy in. >> two reasons, one is that washington has this fiscal cliff. people are worried that the two parties can't come together. second, europe very weak and a lot of big manufacturers do export. don't have a lot of good business there. >> you hear so much, get to the fiscal cliff in a minute. still, the idea of the animal spirits, both on wall street and in corporate america being restrained. what are those spirits and why is that still the case? is it uncertainty about the election outcome in. >> yes, it really does matter. a lot of companies are happy to stockpe their cash. they have got big profits. they don't feel like expanding. why not wait a few months. why not hire now. hire in january. >> also interesting you have a lot of corporations acting like their own banks, right, simply holding on to cash because they are worried about the banking sector still. >> i think that most companies these days want to be self-financed. raised a lot of money. they have gone and issued bonds

at a very low rate. they don't need to hire. they can just keep the cash. >> what's healthy right now, healthy sectors where you see growth? >> healthiest autos. a remarkable number of autos being sold, almost a boom. some strength in retail, health care. those are all hiring. >> when we look at the jobs numbers and see the unemployment rate maybe being static, maybe ticking up, what's a jobs number that you look at that would be a sign of a healthier economy of more remand? >> we need to see under 8% unemployment, need to see north of 120,000 jobs created. we'll know at 8:30. those are both stretch numbers. that would really help the president. i don't know if he can get him. >> talked about the fiscal cliff a minute ago. this is the end of the year, all these issues being kicked down the road here by congress and by the white house, so you have automatic spending cuts that would come into place. both wall street and i would imagine corporate america are deeply concerned about what the impact of that would be. >> when you speak to chief executive officers, i do a lot of that, they all say it. it's their excuse. now, maybe some of them should be hiring. everyone says listen, it's

washington's fault. you've got to remove that roadblock. >> stock market through all of this has been performing very well, why? >> nothing to do with the country or unemployment. the stock market is doing well because the companies have a lot of cash. they are redistributing. they have got some prospects that maybe next year will be better, but right now they are doing better by not hiring instead of hiring. >> jim cramer, thanks so much. more on the jobs report tonight on "mad money" at 6:00 and 11:00 eastern on cnbc. i'll talk about the impact on the presidential race sunday on "meet the press." newt gingrich joins me and also my interview with arnold schwarzenegger. now over to natalie morales at the news desk with the morning's headlines. >> good morning, everyone. american airlines has been forced to cancel more flights this morning after it took 48 boeing 757s out of service to readdress the problem with those loose seats. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hi, natalie, good morning. american said it had to cancel 50 flights yesterday, another 44 today after it ordered those 48 planes to stay on the ground last night while it reexamines

and then fixes the possible with those loose seats. the airline says its mechanics now believe that they have discovered the real problem that caused some seats to come loose, something called the seat lock plunger mechanism. really, it's a pin and lock system that got stuck in the unlocked% on some planes. american blames wear and tear and even spilled soda over the arir for that problem. they inspected and last night pulled those planes because of the pin and lock mechanism. it now is going to put them back into service very slowly. american hopes to have the repairs completed by saturday, but thousands of passengers will likely be inconvenienced again today. natalie. >> all right. tom costello, covering the story for us. thanks, tom. now to israel where a young american man opened fire in a southern resort town. nbc's martin fletcher has more from tel aviv. martin, good morning. >> reporter: hi, natalie, good morning. well, it seemed this was an argument that went sadly too

far. a young american man in his 20s was in the hotel, the leonardo club hotel in eilat israel south. had an argument with a hotel employee that went too far. a security guard came over to try to break up the argument. the american man grabbed the guard's gun and started shooting and killed a man. he then ran away. imagine the panic in the hotel, jewish holiday, hotel full of tourists. the man hid in the hotel kitchen. the police came, a large contingent of police rushed to the hotel. there was a shootout of some kind and the police killed the young american man. we don't know the american's name. we don't know where he came from or what the argument was about, but, again, as i say, it didn't start out as any kind of planned attack. it was an argument that went out of control, and the police are saying nothing to do with terrorism, purely treating it as a criminal matter. natalie. >> thanks, martin. health officials are warning thousands of people across 23

states could be at risk of contracting fungal meningitis, the rare and deadly strain of the disease that's been linked to the contaminated steroid injections given for back pain. at least five people have died from the outbreak and another 35 people across six states have been sickened. united nations is strongly condemning syria's shelling of a turkish border village that killed two women and three children. syrian officials say they are not seeking to escalate the cross-border violence with turkey. this as the u.s. expresses support for turkey's retaliation following the incident. a players lockout has put the hockey season on ice through october 24th. the nhl has cancelled the first two weeks of the regular season. players are locked out over a dispute over how to divvy up some $3 billion in revenue. nasa's curiosity rover is now shovel ready. starting on saturday, the rover will start scooping sand from mars and shake it up for hours to get rid of any residual dirt from our planet. then once it gets the right

disregard for the law and the safety for those kids. a brazen maneuver caught on tape, without even pausing. watch as this driver pulls up on to the curb and drives down the sidewalk to avoid waiting behind a school bus for handicapped children. >> comes through here every morning, goes around the school bus every morning. >> reporter: not just goes around. in the video you can clearly she sheena hardin doesn't just illegally pass on the right but uses a pedestrian walkway as a detour, and this was all captured by the bus driver. mom lisa kelly saw it every day, too, as she waited for the bus to pick up her daughter. >> what if it was her in a wheelchair. >> reporter: hardin does this all the time, but they needed proofrks so the driver got out his cell phone camera and started rolling, getting all the proof needed.

the next day a cleveland police officer was ready and waiting. >> all right. she has been caught. justice has been served. >> reporter: hardin appeared in court on tuesday and plead not guilty to the charges of not stopping for a school bus and reckless driving. hardin's mother trying to explain away her daughter's actions by arguing the bus takes too long and that what her daughter did wasn't all that dangerous. >> clearly the handicapped boy cannot run across the street. there's a factory across the street. >> reporter: look again. across the street is not a factory but a day care center, full of kids, who could have easily been in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> if we are h to evacuate the building, we would have to come through this door. this door here to come out of the building, and if she's coming up on the sidewalk, well, then, there's the danger right there. >> reporter: miss hardin is facing a $500 fine. she's due back in court later this month. we tried to talk to her a couple

to be named ceo of a fortune 500 company, you'll understand why every move marissa mayer makes reverberates with more than just yahoo!'s shareholders. it is a great photo. marissa mayer on the cover of the most recent issue of "for tune" magazine looking professional, elegant and trim, and to some moms on the internet that's the problem because mayer just gave birth to her first child this week. >> of course, pregnancy doesn't define her, but it is so much a part of her story, and it's so much -- it's a big part of the reason why we look up to her, and i was surprised that they didn't show her, you know, pregnant and in a power suit. >> reporter: a "fortune" spokesperson confirms the magazine wanted to shoot mayer for the cover when she was pregnant but she declined. the magazine used a photo taken almost a year ago. >> we're not all demi moore. >> reporter: "huffington post" said too much is being made of

the cover. >> why should she pose nine months pregnant? she doesn't stand for all women. doesn't have to represent us all the time. >> reporter: as mayer rose through the ranks at google, she never publicly shied away from setting an example. >> i think what women in technology really need is role models and inspiration. >> reporter: talking in 2008 about google's maternity leave policy. >> i mean, we basically said a baby should have their parent at home for six weeks, three months, should be standard from the child's point of view which ultimately means it's a really supportive environment for women but doesn't necessarily mean special treatment for women. >> reporter: yahoo! hired mayer as its ceo in july knowing that she was pregnant. when mayer gave birth sunday, a yahoo! spokeswoman told the "new york times" mayer plans to be back in the office within one to two weeks. that, too, is generating flack. >> we should be sending a message that women need more maternity leave. they need better benefits and need more time. they need a workplace that

to show that the economy created 86,000 more jobs in those months than previously estimated. president obama and republican challenger mitt romney are both campaigning in the battleground state of virginia today. last night romney told fox news that his earlier statement seemingly writing off 47% of americans was completely wrong and that his life shows that he cares about 100%. president obama accused romney meanwhile of dancing around his own positions saying that if you want to be president, you owe the american people the truth. american airlines cancelled more flights today so it can fix the problem with seats that could come loose on at least three recent flights. american says all 48 of the boeing 757s being checked should be back in service tomorrow. the airline blames a combination of wear, poor design and even soda spills for causing small pins in the seat lock mechanisms to malfunction. health officials are warning that thousands of people across 23 states could be at risk of

contracting fungal meningitis. the rare and deadly strain of the disease has been linked to contaminated steroid injections given for back pain. at least five people have died from the outbreak and another 35 people across six states have been sickened. a young american man was shot and killed by israeli forces today after he alleged opened fire inside a hotel killing a worker. it happened in the red sea resort city of eilat. officials say the suspect who may have been a former hotel employee apparently grabbed the gun from a female security officer. nasa's curiosity rover is shovel ready. starting on saturday the rover will start scooping sand from mars and shake it up for hours to get rid of any residual dirt from our planet, and once it gets the right scoop of sand, shaken, not stirred, it will then be poured into a mobile lab, and they will start analyzing it. a new study suggests that free birth control can dramatically lower rates of abortion and teen births. researchers tracked more than 9,000 women in st. louis.

curveball columnist jeffrey laszlo was a contributor and frequent guest on the show. he often wrote about the love that he had for his own three daughters and the love he hoped they would find one day. unfortunately, he was killed in a tragic car accident in february. his final book explored the loving relationship with fathers and daughters called "the magic room" and it is now out in

picture and jeffreys is a low's daughter jordan is here to talk to us about it. >> i know it's been a hard eight month. eight months ago you lost your father. how is your family doing and your sisters? >> thanks for asking. we're doing the best we can. it's hard, but we're very lucky to have each other and very lucky to have our friends and family. they have been very wonderful, and it's been uplifting to see how supportive everyone has been. >> yeah. this last book, your dad really focuses on the relationships and love and exploring, you know, and "the magic room" is this bridal salon. why do you think he wanted to write about it? >> i certainly think it's because he was interested in fashion. he wore hawaiian shirts every day. he was speaking to my mom about how he wanted to write a story about love that he wishes for his daughters and where he shut set that, and she thought there's something about a bridal gown that's really special and the relationship that you have with your family when you are

picking out that, you know, that huge piece of clothing that you wear on such a big day. it was really special. >> yeah. and i know that he did his research a l by asking you and your sisters lots of questions about what it's like to be a girl growing up as a woman, right? >> yeah. he definitely used us as subjects quite often which is flattering in a way, you know, that he wanted to hear our opinions and, you know, how we thought it felt like to be a woman i guess. >> i guess so. >> it really is a book about finding love and exploring relationships. what do you in particular relate to in this book? >> well, the story, it's "the magic room" and the subtitle is "the love that we wish for our daughters" and even before my dad passed away it was so special to me to know how important it was for him, for us to find, you know, a very special person to spend the rest of our lives, and i think he always was thinking about our weddings, even before we were, and how important that decision,

is and he wanted to be able to help, you know, facilitate it and make sure he was always there for us, holding our hands and making sure we made the best decisions we could. >> yeah. a beautiful thing to think about. >> is there one particular story because chronicling the lives of many women as they step into "the magic room," the bridal salon, one that resonated with you the most? >> the story of danielle. she actually lost her mom when she was younger, and the beginning of the chapter is so beautiful in the way that my dad describes her relationship. sounds like they had so much fun and had such a special bond, and i sort of -- i understood that relationship so well because i had that kind of bond with my parents. i still do with my mom and my dad, but, you know, those just beautiful. so fun to read because i could totally rela. >> yeah, and meanwhile you mentioned your parents also had a very loving relationship as well. what did you learn from their marriage and the example they set? >> i think that i learned that it's very important to find someone that you love, but also very important to find a partner

because my parents were totally -- they raised us completely 50/50. they respected each other. they had -- they had a great respect for each other that i think helps us live in a more loving, stable household. >> and i understand your dad would also leave notes around the house for you and your sisters as well. >> yes. >> something we can all take away from. >> yeah. it was cute. it was so sweet. always like one-liners, good luck on your exam, something so that we knew he would think of us. >> and your father's legacy, what do you think that is? >> i think it's just to be a good person and just to be kind and to be someone that people want to be around and to be someone that people -- people love and people -- and someone that makes other people feel loved, too, is really important. i think that he did a really good job of making people feel loved >> i know he's very proud of you this moment right now. >> thank you so much. >> so much to meet you. the best. the book is called "the magic room." and we'll be right back, but first these messages. in the most damaging natural disaster that has ever hit the united states, and it proves that anybody has the power to make a difference. in 200510-year-old talia lamond watched from her home in iowa as hurricane katrina devastated the gold coast. >> first i want to use these. >> reporter: even at such a young age she felt compelled to help people affected by the storm devising plans to trick-or-treat for donations, rather than candy. >> why did you decide to do this? >> well, i don't know who wouldn't want to. i mean, who wouldn't want to help? >> reporter: her plan gained momentum. only after some initial opposition from an unlikely foe, her young eer brother xander. >> i'm opposed to it? >> why are you opposed to it? >> because i want my candy back. >> yet xander's opposition actually brought a swell of

support to the cause, and kids around the country joined talia to tally more than $10 million. though at 10 years old she took on the title of ceo, chief executive optimist, and named her organization random kid, and out of that simple act of kindness a philanthropist was born. >> don't be afraid to like embrace that. >> reporter: now 17 and a senior in high school, she continues to do good and shares her message with other young people. >> i figured that if kids could raise $10 million for hurricane relief, that we could do anything. >> reporter: and she's even written a new book titled "a random book about the power of anyone." do you still think of yourself as a random kid? >> i definitely think of myself as a random kid. i think all along people would ask, like, why are you so special? and, you know, i wasn't. i was a random kid who saw a problem and wanted to do something. >> according to random kids, the

non-profit has connected 12 million kids in 20 different countries to date, mobilizing them to work on charitable projects of their own, ranging from disaster relief and clean water projects, to building schools as far away as cambodia. one of the things that i loved about your book is they are fuld of what i have coined as taliaisms or lessons that you've learned at the ripe age of 17 years old. do you mind just listing a couple of those for us? >> the way i arranged the contents on the table was all like counterintuitive messages, like, for example, big efforts can't measure up because they can't, you know, small efforts that matter the most or, for example, too many cooks is the right number, and you realize that everyone leads with their passion, with their greatest skill, that that's really important. >> reporter: scattered throughout the pages of talia's book are images of her biggest inspiration, her little brother xander who opposed her plans back in 2005 but has since come around. >> i really look up to him, he's

a role model for me, and i think that the reason that is he has autism spectrum disorder and with that comes this incredible -- he's so genuine in who he is, and i strive to be at least as close to as genuine as he is. >> reporter: and before heading to -- talia has another project in the works, she is calling the big return. random kid partnered with a non-profit youth venture to fund and train some st. louis students in project development. they gave the kids 6,800 and after four months kids turned that in 72,000. >> the return on investment pure financially was over a 900% return so now i'm looking to take that to more the next five years. you can give $1 to haiti or give it to a kid and that turns into $10 for haiti. >> reporter: she even speculates with b a possible run for office. nicholas kristof has endorsed you for president, albeit in
